Marin Cilic v Ilya Ivashka Predictions & Preview

This is the first meeting between both players.

Former world number three and 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic was a consistent member of the top 10 in the ATP rankings until last season. 2019 was a dismal year for the Croat, who fell to number 40 in the rankings and was never able to get any momentum throughout the season.

Cilic started the year, hoping to recover some of his lost form and after an indifferent ATP Cup, seemed to hit some good form at the Australian Open. Cilic defeated the in-form Roberto Bautista Agut, before being eliminated by Milos Raonic in the round of 16.

The Croat will hope to continue his resurgence from Melbourne here in Marseille, as he seeks to be a force on the tour again.

Belarusian Ilya Ivashka has been a regular on the ATP Challenger tour, and has won two Challenger titles and three ITF Future titles in addition. The 25-year-old is yet to be a regular on the main tour, but broke into the top 100 of the ATP rankings early last year.

Although, 2020 has not got off to the best of starts thus far on the main tour for Ivashka, who has fallen out of the top 100 in the rankings, he will be hoping for some good outings to bolster his confidence and rankings.

Expect this to be a clinical opener for Cilic in two relatively comfortable sets.

Jannik Sinner v Nerbert Gombos Predictions & Preview

Italian teenage Jannik Sinner had a good end to 2019, reaching the final four of the ATP 250 at Antwerp and winning the Next Gen ATP Tour Finals in Milan.

2020 got off to a mediocre start for him with an early loss at the Australian Open, but he had a good run last week at the ATP 500 in Rotterdam, defeating David Goffin and being a match point away from winning his quarter-finals against Pablo Carreno Busta.

Slovakia’s Nerbert Gombos has been on the tour for a while, but has had a career largely limited to the ATP Challenger Tour and the ITF Futures. With a ranking around number 100 in the world, Gombos has looked to improve his standing on the main ATP tour.

He had a good run at Montpellier earlier this month where he was a quarter-finalist, having defeated Carreno Busta en route.

This could be a closer match than one may anticipate, but Sinner has been in good touch of late and expect him to win this match in two well-fought sets.

Giles Simon v Harold Mayot Predictions & Preview

This is the first meeting between the veteran Frenchman Simon and the eighteen-year-old Mayot, also from France.

Giles Simon has  been on the tour for about a decade and a half, been ranked in the top ten of the ATP rankings at a point in time, been the winner of 14 ATP titles and looking to move back up in the ATP rankings.

He was a regular in the ATP top 50 rankings from 2005-2017, with 2017 being the first year he ended the year ranked outside the top 50.

After a none too successful 2018 and 2019, Simon has not had the best of starts to 2020, with early losses at the Australian Open and more recently at Montpellier and Rotterdam in the last two weeks. Familiar with the conditions here in Marseille, Simon will look for a good run to give himself confidence going into the rest of the season.

18-year-old Frenchman Harold Mayot has performed well on the junior tour, most recently winning the boys’ title at the Australian Open.  Mayot is making his debut on the main tour as a wildcard and will hope to make the most of this opportunity.

Expect a routine win for the experienced Simon.

Vasek Pospisil v Emil Ruusuvuori Predictions & Preview

This is the first meeting between the two players.

Canadian Vasek Pospisil returned to the tour late last year after a long injury layoff. Once ranked as high as number 25 in the ATP rankings in the middle of the last decade, it has been a difficult road back to the tour following back injuries and surgery.

After a good performance at the Davis Cup for Team Canada at the end of 2019, Pospisil has looked to get better with every tournament this year. The Canadian was a finalist at the ATP 250 at Montpellier, securing wins against David Goffin and Denis Shapovalov. He followed it with an opening round win against top seed Daniil Medvedev at the Rotterdam ATP 500, returning to the top 100 on the tour.

Qualifier Emil Ruusuvuori is a little known name on the tour. The 20-year-old from Finland has performed well in the Juniors, as well as Futures and Challengers, and is looking to launch his career on the main tour.

Although early days, young Ruusuvuori will be hoping to gain in experience with every appearance, and begin to make an impression sooner rather than later.

Given the difference in experience of both players, and the form Pospisil has been in recent times, it is difficult to foresee this being much of challenge for the Canadian.

Expect a straight sets win for Pospisil.
