Cristian Garin v Borna Coric Head to Head

Garin and Coric have met only once previously on the lawns of Den Bosch last summer. The Croat saved match-points towards a three-set victory in the quarterfinal.

Garin Unbeaten So Far in South American Clay Swing

Cristian Garin had an indifferent start to the 2020 season, winning just a single match during the Australian summer. The Chilean lost in all three of his singles rubbers in the inaugural ATP Cup, and then was bundled out of the first round in Adelaide.

Although he won his first-ever main draw match in Melbourne against Stefano Travaglia, he was outclassed by the big-serving Milos Raonic in the second round.

Garin has now returned to South America looking to rediscover his form that propelled him into one of the world’s finest clay-court players. And judging by how imperious he has been this February, it seems he never lost a step on the surface.

The man from Santiago picked up his third ATP tour title of his burgeoning career at the Cordoba Open a fortnight ago, beating the likes of clay-court specialists Pablo Cuevas and Diego Schwartzman. He pulled out of the Argentina Open and instead put all his eggs in one basket, with the prospect of winning his biggest title in Rio.

His progress to the last four has not been straightforward, needing a couple of three-setters along the way, but he is still unbeaten on the clay-courts of South America this year.

Croatia’s Borna Coric reached his first ATP tour semifinal since last September in St. Petersburg. Coric beat Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets in the quarterfinals on Friday, just in time before the rain suspended the day’s play.

The fifth seed’s match was originally suspended for nearly four hours with Sonego leading 5-4 in the first set. However, the 23-year-old leveled the scores on resumption and would need to register just a single service break in a tight contest to win 7-6 6-3.

Coric admitted afterwards, this was the best he has played in 2020 now that he is looking to re-establish himself among the elite. His 2019 season was one to forget, with injuries and inconsistency halting his progress, but he still harbors hopes of returning to the top.
