John Isner v Mischa Zverev Head to Head

Isner and Mischa Zverev are currently tied at 3-3 in their head-to-head, but they haven’t played each other since a quarterfinal meeting in Atlanta in 2018, where the American won in three sets.

Isner Suffered An Early Exit in New York

John Isner is returning to Acapulco for the fourth straight year. And for the last two editions of the event, the big-serving American has bettered the previous year’s showings.

In 2018, Isner lost in the first round to fellow American Ryan Harrison, but last year he made the semifinals where he fell to eventual champion Nick Kyrgios in a tense three-set battle.

As far as recent history goes, Isner had never played more than six matches at this stage of the year. The season is barely two months old, but thanks to the introduction of the newest team tournament, the ATP Cup, the American has been a regular fixture.

Isner lost all three of his singles matches at the ATP Cup, but he did reach the semifinals of the ASB Classic in Auckland and carried some form at the first Grand Slam of the year in Melbourne. However, his stay in Australia was curt short after he retired in his third round match against Wawrinka due to a foot injury.

The 34-year-old returned to action in New York last week, but was stunned by Australia’s Jordan Thompson in the second round.

Did Mischa Zverev Merit A Wildcard Entry?

A wildcard entry is always a show of appreciation of a player’s progression or development, but for the case of Mischa Zverev, the current World No.257, who has barely featured on the main draw of an ATP tour tournament for the past one year, it begs the question on whether he actually deserved it.

Of course, Zverev is an ATP tour titlist, and has been ranked as high as No.25 in the world. He also reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam at the Australian Open in 2017. But, in a prestigious ATP 500-level tournament, Zverev’s recent form at Challenger level just doesn’t add up to justify his selection for a wildcard spot.

The 32-year-old has also not won a match in three attempts in Acapulco.
