Disappointing Season so far for Pella After a Great 2019

The 30-year-old Argentine is finding it difficult to replicate last season’s brilliant form. Pella won his first ATP title last year when won at Sao Paulo in Brazil. This was followed by a brilliant quarter-final run at Wimbledon.

Pella reached the last eight whilst beating the 2016 finalist Milos Raonic in a five-set match after being down by two sets. On the back of these impressive performances, he achieved his career-best ranking of 20.

But performances this season have failed to leave up to last year’s mark. He did start the season on a bright note by winning two matches in the ATP Cup.

He followed that up by reaching the third round at the Australian Open. But lost three out of the next four matches. He also hasn’t played any competitive tennis since the season was suspended and it will be interesting to see how ready he is without any quality practice.

His best showing at the Flushing Meadows was two years ago when he reached the third round. If he can emulate that feat this year, he will once again break into the top 20 and most likely achieve a new career-best ranking as well.

Wolf in Impressive Form at the Lower Levels

The 21-year-old American has a 21-5 win-loss record this year and he has played all of his matches on the hard courts. Although the caveat with this stat is that all of his wins have come on the Challenger Circuit and the qualification rounds of ATP Events.

He is still to win his first match in the main draw at an ATP event this year. But that record may change soon as he prepares to take on a player who hasn’t a lot of matches practise under his belt.

Wolf has won four titles at the lower level in the last two seasons and is predominantly a hard court player. In fact, out of the 114 matches he has played in his career, only four of them have been on the clay and he has never even played on Grass Courts at all. But with a strong forehand and quick movement around the court, he could be more than a handful.

Currently, he is ranked 143 in the world and is likely to achieve his career-best ranking once the US Open is over.

Guido Pella v John Wolf Prediction & Tip

It could be a tricky one for Pella. He is coming into this match with no competitive tennis in a while. His opponent, on the other hand, has been winning a lot of matches lately. It is a perfect recipe for an early-round upset. But Pella’s experience may just get him through to the next round in the end.

Tip: Pella to win in four sets: 3/1 (bet365)
