Slovakia’s Kovalik has played in only one tournament on hard court all year and that also came before the pandemic hit and suspended the season.
He started out as a lucky loser at the Australian Open where he was then beaten in four sets by Pablo Carreno Busta, and then focussed his attention to the clay court surfaces at Buenos Aires.
Kovalik won his opener at the Buenos Aires Open after making it through as a qualifier before losing to Pedro Sousa and then failed to qualify for the Rio Open. At Santiago, in the next tournament on clay, he had a direct entry but couldn’t make much of it as he lost that first round match in straight sets.
After featuring in a few exhibition tournaments during the break, Kovalik came back to the circuit with an appearance at the Prague Challenger two weeks ago but with no hard court practice under his belt, one wonders how would he go even against a player ranked below him.

Cressy More Active on Hard Courts
If one looks at tournaments of all nature, ATP, Grand Slams and exhibition, this first round appearance as a wild-card at the US Open would be his 10th of the year. All of these have been on hard court or indoor hard courts, a clear indicator where his preferences lie in a sharp contrast to his opponent’s.
While he was knocked out in the first round of the Australian Open qualifiers – his only other ATP tournament this season – Cressy has featured in multiple Challenger competitions and done rather well. After making it to the third round at Cleveland, he won his third career title at Drummondville, and then made the final at the Calagary Challenger.
A first round defeat just before the tennis suspension at the Indian Wells Challenger was an obvious dampener but he has played in a few matches during the pandemic break too and should be more prepared for this encounter.
