World No. 2 Simona Halep competed in the Gippsland Trophy last week in a bid to build some form ahead of the Grand Slam.
With a bye in the first round, she started off well with back to back, straight-set wins over Anastasia Potapova and Laura Siegemund.
She ran into heavy resistance in the quarterfinal when she met the number 9 seed, Ekaterina Alexandrova. Halep was stunned by the Russian with 6-2, 6-1, as she found herself outclassed in all aspects of the game. It took the 26-year-old just an hour to dismantle the three-time French Open finalist.
That was Halep’s first major defeat of its kind since losing to Iga Swiatek in Roland Garros fourth round last year.
Nonetheless, for someone like Halep’s stature, that defeat wouldn’t be a problem. She is already eyeing what’s ahead of her and needs to be focussed, considering that she is placed in the same half as Swiatek, Serena Williams, Aryna Sabalenka, Naomi Osaka, and others.
The Romanian won three WTA titles last season and will look to build on that experience here in Melbourne.

Cabrera Carrying Local Hopes
The 23-year-old Australian finds herself competing in one of the biggest matches of her young career.
Cabrera hasn’t been particularly phenomenal of late. She did participate in one of the WTA 500 level events in Melbourne last week but ended up falling to Varvara Gracheva in the opening round.
Apart from that, the youngster has been spending a majority of her time on the ITF circuit, with not a lot to show for.
Lizette has been awarded a wildcard into the main draw but for her to face Halep right off the bat, perhaps, this is not the time when she makes her mark. Having never won a main draw match in a Grand Slam, it might not be getting any easier here for the Aussie.
