What Happened at the 2022 ATP Sofia Open?

The seventh edition of the Sofia Open, played in 2022, threw a surprise result in the form of Swiss player Marc-Andrea Huesler winning the title. He defeated Holger Rune in the final 6-4, 7-6 (8).

Two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner was the top seed and reached the semifinal where he called it quits from the third set against Rune. Huesler overcame Lorenzo Musetti in the other semifinal.

Jannik Sinner defended his title successfully in the 2021 Sofia Open by overcoming Gael Monfils in the final, winning 6-3, 6-4 to add another ATP tournament win to his kitty.

Sinner, who had a first round and was the top seed in the competition, went through the tournament without dropping a set to come through. He defeated Filip Krajinovic while Monfils overcame Marcos Giron in the semifinal.

In a battle of unseeded players, Jannik Sinner added a second career title to his name when he lifted the Sofia Open 2020 trophy by beating Canada’s Vasek Pospisil in a hard-fought final. He won 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (3).

The only seeded player to reach the semifinal of the 2020 Sofia Open was the fifth seeded Adrian Mannarino, even as the top seeded Denis Shapovalov and fourth seeded Jan-Lennard Struff fell in the second round after getting opening round byes.

In 2019, Daniil Medvedev had showed the early signs of his solid year with a title win at the Sofia Open when he defeated Marton Fucovics in the final in straight sets. This was after he had wasted no time in disposing off Gael Monfils, the seventh seed 6-2, 6-4 to make the final.

In some of the other matches, top seeded Karen Khachanov had an opening round bye but went down to Matteo Berrettini in three sets in the second, while Stefanos Tsitsipas, seeded second lost to Monfils in the quarterfinals.

Mirza Basic entered the Sofia Open as a qualifier, having won two matches during that phase to make it to the main draw, and went on to lift the trophy. He defeated another unseeded player, Marius Copil in a hard-fought, three-set final, winning 7-6, 6-7, 6-4. This was his first ever ATP title.

Among the eight seeded players who participated in the tournament, only two made it past the second round. Stan Wawrinka was one of them, seeded one and he was ousted by Basic in the semi-finals. Copil defeated another qualifier Jozef Kovalik in the other semi-final.

Viktor Troicki was the only other seeded player to make it to the quarter-final, where he lost to Wawrinka in straight sets.
