Garbine Muguruza v Margarita Gasparyan Head to Head
The two women have never met before – this will be the first meeting between the world number ten and her Russian opponent, currently 65 places below her in the rankings.
Muguruza, Needs to Improve After First Round Match
Muguruza came into the tournament looking for form and confidence after an indifferent year so far, but was made to work surprisingly hard for her first round victory over lowly Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse. She won in straight sets in the end, but made heavy weather of what should have been a comfortable win.
Above all she will need to work on her serve. Although she served seven aces and won 70% of her points on first serve, her second serve percentage point win was down at just 38%, and could be a vulnerability against a stronger opponent. The defending champion has work to do if she wants to retain her crown.
Gasparyan, Trying to Get Back to Her Best
Right-handed Gasparyan is no novice, having won 9 ITF titles in her career so far, and two senior WTA tournaments – the Baku Cup in 2015, and the Tashkent Open last September.
However, she has done very little in 2019 to enhance her reputation, losing in the first round of the Australian Open to Elise Mertens, followed by first round defeats in St. Petersburg and Miami, having missed the intervening tournaments due to injury.
She thrashed Mexican wildcard Victoria Rodriquez, however, in the first round here, losing just one game, so that will have boosted her confidence.
At 6 ft. she is one of the tallest women on tour, and that will help her service and enable her to get bounce off the court.
Muguruza v Gasparyan Predictions & Tips
Muguruza, the defending champion, will start odds-on favourite for this match at 4/11, whilst you can get 5/2 on the Russian. Muguruza made hard work of her first round opponent but, having now got any rustiness out of her game, should have too much power at her disposal for a woman not in the best of form herself.
