Madison Keys v Monica Puig Head to Head
The two players have met each other a total of four times on the WTA Tour. The head to head tally is currently tied at 2-2, with their last meeting taking place in the 2016 French Open. Back then, it was Keys who won that encounter to reach the fourth round.
A Remarkable Performance by the Two Ladies
Keys and Puig have respectively delivered the best performance of their season in Charleston over the course of the week. Both the players had a rather rough start to the year and they have certainly done a good job of turning it around.
Puig began her run in the tournament with a straight-set win over the Italian veteran Sara Errani and then dispatched the number 13 seed Sofia Kenin. In the third round, she delivered a major upset by knocking out Aryna Sabalenka and built on that win with a clinical win over Danielle Collins. She achieved all of this without dropping a single set.
Meanwhile, Keys enjoyed a bye into the second round and defeated Tatjana Maria in three sets first. Then, she met the number 10 seed Jelena Ostapenko and moved past her with 7-5, 6-2. In the quarterfinal, she delivered the biggest win of her year by knocking out the American No. 1 Sloane Stephens in three sets.
A Similar Spell for the Two Players
Keys arrived in Charleston with a win-loss record of 4-4 while Puig was at 5-7. Both the players have been struggling with a loss of form of late. Coincidentally, the last time two players reached the final on the tour was back in 2017.
Keys started the year on a promising note with a fourth-round stint in the Australian Open. After that, however, she moved on to lose the rest of her opening matches in the Indian Wells Open and Miami Open. As for Puig, the 2016 Olympics Gold Medalist failed to have a discernible run, up until now.
She lost in the early rounds in all of her tournaments. Her last event was in Miami where she was knocked out by Xiyu Wang in the first opener.
Keys v Puig Tips & Predictions
With their head to head record tied at 2-2 and having delivered a great performance in Charleston, this is going to be an evenly matched fixture. Both of them have already defeated big-ticket players here and can very well give each other a good fight.
However, Puig may have the edge here, given that she has won two of their three meetings on clay.
