Svetlana Kuznetsova v Ekaterina Alexandrova Head to Head

This the first time that the two Russian women will meet in a tennis match at the highest level.

Former Grand Slam Champion Kuznetsova Hoping for Turnaround

Now ranked outside the top 100 in the world, Kuznetsova at 33 is some way past the peak of her form that saw her win 18 WTA titles, and two Grand Slams – the US Open in 2004 and the French Open five years later.

Ranked eleven on the all-time career earnings list, she has missed the whole of the 2019 season to date with injury. This is her first tournament of the year.

In fact, she has not picked up a racket in anger since last September in Guangzhou, where she got to the second round. However, she did get to the final of the Washington Open a month earlier where she won the title by beating Donna Vekic in that title-decider.

Alexandrova, Near Her Best Form

24-year old Alexandrova is playing close to her all-time career high ranking.

Winner of two WTA 125k series titles and seven ITF tournament wins, she has some form on clay; two of those ITF wins, in Prague in 2013, and Wiesbaden a year later, came on that surface. And the last final she contested, in Budapest last year, was also on clay, although she lost that match to Viktoria Kuznova.

In terms of 2019 results to date , her best performance on the WTA tour came in Sofia, where she reached the quarter-final, although she had another good run in the Challenger event in Budapest again, reaching the semi-final.

Her encouraging form continued in Indian Wells where she reached the third round before losing to Belinda Bencic, but she lost first time of asking in Miami.

Kuztnetsova v Alexandrova Predictions & Tips

Alexandrova is the odds-on favourite at 8/13, whilst Kuznetsova is priced at 6/4. Because of injury problems, Kuznetsova has no recent form to speak of, so is something of an unknown quantity coming into this match, but is bound to be rusty after such a long time out, so Alexandrova should win.

Tip: Alexandrova to win in straight sets: 6/5 (Betfair)
