Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Kyle Edmund Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the two players on the ATP Tour.

Tsonga Off to a Good Start

The Frenchman started his clay season with a 6-1, 7-6(3) win over the German player Cedrik-Marcel Stebe on Monday. It took Tsonga just an hour and 20 minutes and first service win-rate of 76% to reach the second round.

It will be interesting to see how far Tsonga goes in Marrakech, given that his track record on the clay is the lowest in comparison to the other two surfaces. Of the 17 titles that he has won in his career, only one of them came on clay – the 2017 ATP Lyon.

Nonetheless, Tsonga will fancy his chances here following his good start to the season. Having started the year outside of the top 200, he has made it to the made to the No. 116 position after winning the ATP Montpellier and reaching the quarterfinal in ATP Rotterdam.

He could have certainly made it to the top 100 by now had it not been for his early defeats in Marseille and Miami.

Edmund’s Superior Record on Clay

Being the runner-up in Marrakech last season, he is off to a good start this time around too. In his opening match, he dispatched Ugo Humbert of France with 6-3, 6-2, in 79 minutes. The win would have been far more clinical had Edmund converted more than four break points out of a possible 10.

Edmund is a player who is certainly capable of delivering an early upset here. He arrived in Marrakech with a win-loss record of 4-4 and has won the Challenger event in Indian Wells last month. Moreover, he reached the fourth round in the Indian Wells Open and Miami Masters, losing respectively to Roger Federer and John Isner.

As for his record against top 10 players, he has registered wins over the likes of Milos Raonic, David Goffin, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Isner, and Kevin Anderson over the course of his career.
