Steve Johnson v Daniel Elahi Galan Head to Head

This will be the first meeting between the two men.

Johnson, Back on Tried and Trusted Ground

29-year old Johnson will feel that he owns this tournament. Winner for the past two years, he will consider that he has an excellent chance of claiming it for a third time this week. That would give him a fifth ATP title, and his first since he won the Hall of Fame Tennis Championship on grass last year.

It will also give the world number 39 a boost after a somewhat indifferent year so far, with his best result to date coming in Delray Beach where he reached the quarter-final.

Since then though, his form has been disappointing. He was beaten by Stan Wawrinka in Acapulco, and suffered early round losses in both Indian Wells and Miami. With the Monte-Carlo Masters up next, this would be a good practice in the lead-up to it, especially if he can make it through to the later stages.

Elahi Galan, Lowly-Ranked but Can he Give a Fight?

Bolivian Elahi Galan is a right-handed player who has done little on the senior tour to date, although he has won three ITF Futures titles, two of which came on clay, most recently winning the San Benedetto Tennis Cup in Italy last year.

A man more at home on the Challenger circuit, prior to this week he had failed to get past the first round in any tournament he had entered in 2019, and, on the senior tour, failed to qualify for the main event in Melbourne and Acapulco.

However, he has already shown some liking for the clay of Houston. Entering the qualifying competition as a wildcard, he easily bet Sebastian Offner of Austria, before battling past Roberto Quirroz of Ecuador to make the main draw. He then had probably his best win of the year so far, beating Italian veteran Paolo Lorenzi in the first round to set-up the meeting with Johnson.

Johnson v Elahi Galan Predictions & Tips

Johnson will start heavy odds-on favourite for the match at 7/17 whilst Elahi Galan is priced at 23/10.  Johnson has won this event for the past two years and is looking to make it a third and it is hard to see the Bolivian derailing that bid.

Tip: Johnson to win in straight sets: 1/1 (Unibet)
