Stefanos Tsitsipas v Mikhail Kukushkin Head to Head
Three matches played between these two players and Stefanos Tsitsipas has won all three occasions before this encounter. All three of those encounters came as recently as in the last 12 months or so, with victories in Dubai and Rome last year and Marseille earlier this year. In both those first two victories, Kukushkin had managed to carve out a set from his opponent but earlier this year, Tsitsipas was a straight-set winner.
Tsitsipas Confident from Previous Clay Season
The Greek sensation has had a solid season so far that has included a title win in Marseille, a semi-final at the Australian Open and another runner-up in Dubai. However, lest one mistakes him to be a one-trick pony, his clay record is equally good.
Last season, he was a qualifier at Monte-Carlo but following that he made the final at the Barcelona Open where he lost to Rafael Nadal, was a semi-finalist at Estoril and then made it to the main draw at the Rome Masters too. At the French Open he went down to the eventual finalist Dominic Thiem in round two.
Tsitsipas comes into the tournament on the back of a second round exit at the Indian Wells Masters but he manage a fourth round appearance in Miami. He was apologetic about his comments regarding Roger Federer during the pre-tournament press conference and will hope that controversy is out of his way heading into this tournament.
Kukushkin’s Best in Six Monte-Carlo Appearances Already
In 2012, Kukushkin made it to the third round at the Monte-Carlo Masters but since then he has not even reached the second round in the following five attempts. Four of those five times he was knocked out in the qualifiers and the one time he did make it to the main draw was in 2015 but he was knocked out in round one by Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Now, Kukushkin has gone one better by entering round two and comes into this tournament on the back of some good form. He was a losing finalist at the Phoenix Challenger but more vitally, he had earlier made it as far as the final of the Marseille Open where he lost to Tsitsipas himself in straight sets.
