Alexander Zverev v Fabio Fognini Head to Head

The two men have played twice before, once on the clay of the Rome Masters in 2017, and then again on the hard courts of Beijing later that same year. On each occasion, the German won easily in straight sets.

Zverev Will Gain Confidence from Auger Aliassime Victory

The world number three came into this tournament looking for some consistency and an upturn in form after recent disappointments in Indian Wells, Miami, and Marrakesh. He was given a tough-looking opening match against Canadian teenager Felix Auger Aliassime, but dealt with a potentially awkward opponent with ease, winning 6-1, 6-4.

He will now be hoping that a run deep into this tournament will give him a boost head of the rest of the European clay court season, and he will get back to the performance levels that have seen him touted as a potential future multiple Grand Slam winner.

Incidentally, at the end of the match he did say this was the fittest he had been in some time, which should augur well for him going into the rest of this tournament.

Injury Concerns Behind Recent Form for Fognini

The world number 18 has had a terrible year so far in 2019. After reaching the third round in Melbourne, he exited his next four tournaments – in Cordoba, Buenos Aires, Rio, and Indian Wells – at the first time of asking. He did get through to the second round in Miami, but then reverted to type with another early loss in Marrakech.

However, he has now revealed that he has been struggling with persistent ankle and elbow injuries, and although he intends to battle through to the French Open, he will take a break after that to have the surgery that he hopes will fix his current physical ailments.

Despite this, he bravely fought back from a set and two breaks down to beat Russian Andrey Rublev in the first round here, and was then given a welcome rest day when his prospective second round opponent, Gilles Simon of France, retired.

Zverev v Fognini Predictions & Tips

Zverev is the overwhelming odds-on favourite for this match at 21/100, whilst Fognini is priced at 59/20. Not only does the German have the advantage when it comes to their head-to-head record but he is also in better physical shape than the ailing Italian. Zverev should win easily.

Tip: Zverev to win in straight sets: 7/10 (888Sport)
