Halep, Pliskova Qualify for WTA Finals

Who will qualify for the WTA Finals?

Debutant Svitolina Joins Williams in WTA Finals

Five of the eight spots in the 2017 WTA Finals have been booked after Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina and Venus Williams sealed their berths for WTA’s year-ending tournament.

They join Garbine Muguruza, who had earlier qualified for the WTA Finals, which means just three more spots are left for the competition that will be played in October.

This will be Halep’s fourth successive appearance at the WTA Finals. She has already made it to the final of one of them – back in 2014 – but lost to Serena Williams in the title-decider. Interestingly, earlier in the competition, Halep had beaten Williams during the group stages.

Halep won a title at the Madrid Open and was the losing finalist at the French Open earlier this year.

Pliskova, who was the top-ranked player in the world going into the 2017 US Open, will feature in her second WTA Finals. Last year, she played in both, the singles and doubles competition.

And while Pliskova is yet to win a Grand Slam title, she has won three WTA singles titles this year including WTA Brisbane International, Qatar Open and the WTA Eastbourne.

It will be a debut for Elina Svitolina, after scooping on five WTA singles titles. She triumphed at the Taiwan Open, WTA Dubai, WTA Istanbul, WTA Rome, and the Rogers Cup. A French Open quarter-final helped her jump into the top five of the WTA Rankings.

Venus Williams will be making her fifth appearance at the WTA Finals, having won the title once in 2008. That included a win over her sister Serena before getting past Vera Zvonareva in the decider.

Some of the other players who are still in the reckoning for a place in the WTA Finals are Caroline Wozniacki, Johanna Jonta, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Dominika Cibulkova.
