Elise Mertens v Daria Kasatkina Head to Head

The pair have met only twice on the WTA Tour and the tally is currently tied at 1-1. They last met in New Haven in 2017, where the Belgian defeated Kasatkina in straight sets.

Kasatkina, Eyeing a Resurgence

The 21-year-old Russian had a very promising start to her career, winning her first singles title in the 2017 WTA Charleston as a teenager. Later that year, she reached the final in the Kremlin Cup and the next season, she made her debut in the top 10 with runner-up feats in Dubai and Indian Wells.

She also moved on to conquer the Kremlin Cup in her second attempt. However, her 2019 season so far hasn’t been that great. Owing to a slow start, she has fallen out of the top 20.

As of Miami, her win-loss tally stands at 2-7, with those two victories coming respectively in Dubai and the Miami Open. Needless to mention, Kasatkina lost her opening rounds in almost every single event she played in.

Furthermore, she also split with her long-time coach Philippe Dehaes shortly after her disappointing spell in Dubai. This will be an intriguing part of the equation. It will be interesting to see how things pan out for her on clay, given that she prefers playing on this surface. With her first title of the career coming on the same, it will be fitting if she manages to get out of her funk here.

A Much Better Year for Mertens

Earlier this year, the young Belgian won her fifth singles title in Qatar after defeating many big names like Kiki Bertens, Angelique Kerber, and Simona Halep.

However, that was the sole feat that is worthy of some consideration in her performance this season. She hasn’t been that consistent although, she has still managed to land more wins than Kasatkina.

She reached the third round in Sydney and Melbourne and repeated the same feat in the Sunshine Doubles too. Her last event was in Charleston where she lost her opening round to Kaia Kanepi in three sets.

Mertens v Kasatkina Tips & Predictions

By the looks of it, Mertens will start this match as the favourite to win. She has been in a fairly better form than her Russian adversary. Nonetheless, Kasatkina is more than capable of putting up a terrific fight here, especially with clay being her preferred choice of surface.

This should be an interesting game to watch that can very well go either way.

Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 17/20 (betway)
