Karolina Pliskova v Victoria Azarenka Head to Head

There have been six previous meetings between these two players and both have won three apiece. On clay as well, they have met twice, once at Prague 11 years ago but more recently at Madrid in 2018 and it’s 1-1. The last two matches, both in 2018 were won by Pliskova though.

Most Consistent Woman of the Year So Far, Pliskova

Other than the Fed Cup quarter-final tie between Czech Republic and Romania, Pliskova has featured in five tournaments this year and made it at least to the quarter-finals at all of them. There was a title win at Brisbane to start off the season and while she hasn’t won another tournament after that, her performances have been quite exemplary since then.

Pliskova made it to the semi-final at the Australian Open where she went down to the eventual champion Naomi Osaka, was a quarter-finalist at the Indian Wells Open before ending her hard-court swing for the time being with a finals appearance at the Miami Open.

And while she went down to Ash Barty in a hard-fought final in Miami, she would take a lot of positives from the first phase of the season as he looks to return back to the number one ranking in the world.

Azarenka Slowly but Surely Turning Things Around

After her well-chronicled host of issues off the court, Azarenka has had a dramatic fall in the rankings but she is slowly and steadily returning back to her best.

Now make no mistake, her best was when she was ranked number one in the world and won the Australian Open, so at 61st in the world, she is still some time away from that, but there have been quite a few positive signs. The biggest one of them was a run to the final of the Monterrey Open, in which she defeated Angelique Kerber, before losing to Garbine Muguruza to finish runner-up.

Question is whether she has enough ammo to get past another former world number one but a player who has shown enough form to put her as a heavy favourite going into this encounter. In more recent times, Azarenka hasn’t won too many matches on clay, with a win-loss record of 4-5 since the start of 2016.

Pliskova v Azarenka Predictions & Tips

Over the years, Pliskova has had her issues on clay but last year, she proved she could give anyone a fight with a title at Stuttgart, a semi-final in Madrid and then an early, third round loss at the French Open. She starts favourite here.

Tip: Pliskova to win: 8/11 (888Sport)
