Rafael Nadal v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

This will be a first ever meeting on the ATP tour between these two players.

Nadal Is Seeking An Unprecedented 12th Title In Barcelona

Rafael Nadal labeled his shocking defeat to Fabio Fognini in Monte Carlo as the worst tennis he has ever played on his beloved clay for 14 years. That was quite a big statement for a man who has traditionally made a habit of suffocating and blowing off opponents with relative ease on the dirt.

Despite a shaky start in his opening match in Barcelona, Nadal found a way to overcome a resurgent Leonardo Mayer in three sets, and is on course to achieve a dozen titles at this event.

Nadal has never been more vulnerable on clay than this year and that is largely due to the little tennis he has played following surgery at the tail end of last year, but if there is one thing the Spaniard has taught us over the years is that you can write him off at your own peril.

Struff Knows A Thing Or Two About Upsets

Jan-Lennard Struff has notched up some big wins over the last 18 months including a recent straight sets demolition of World No.3 Alexander Zverev at the BNP Paribas Open.

The German recorded another significant win in his portfolio of giant-killing upsets when he knocked out last year’s runner-up in Barcelona Stefanos Tsitsipas with brilliant display of power tennis in which he struck an incredible 31 winners.

If Struff is to continue his streak of defying the odds, he needs to hit through Nadal but that is usually easier said than done. Another surprising aspect of the 29-year-old’s game is that he is quite comfortable in finding his range and is willing to take risks and take the ball early, which could be crucial in his meeting against the King of Clay.

Nadal v Struff Predictions & Tips

It is hard to go against Nadal in this one especially when you consider his remarkable record not just in Barcelona but in pretty much all clay court events. He hits his peak at this time almost every year. The top seed put a clinical display in his straight sets win over compatriot David Ferrer in arguably his best display yet. Struff has a lot of power to hit a lot of players off the court but Nadal is certainly not in that category.

Tip: Games Handicap – Rafael Nadal – 5.5 Games: 10/13 (888Sport)
