Karen Khachanov v Philipp Kohlschreiber Head to Head

The players have met 3 times on the ATP circuit with Kohlschreiber leading the head to head 2-1. The last time they met was on clay at the 2018 ATP Masters in Rome, which the German won in three tight sets. Both players are at very different stages of their careers. Khachanov is one of the ‘Next Gen’ looked upon as a force to be in the years to come. The German, on the other hand, is a veteran of the game who has been on the circuit for more than a decade and always thought of as one you do not want to take lightly.

Khachanov Looking For Return To Form

Branded as one of the players to watch out for among the upcoming next generation (Next Gen), Khachanov had a breakthrough 2018. The Russian ended the year ranked at number 11 in the ATP rankings and winning his first ATP 1000 Masters beating Novak Djokovic in the final.

Khachanov has a powerful all round game and does not hesitate to come up to the net. The beginning of this year promised to be a continuation of the Khachanov of 2018.

The 2019 season has not been as kind to Khachanov as the previous year and the Russian has had many a disappointing loss this year.

Early dismissals at the Australian Open, the ATP Masters 1000 on hard court and clay and lesser known tournaments has been the story of Khachanov’s year thus far. The Russian has not managed to get into any sort of rhythm or gain momentum at all thus far and will be hoping for more consistency and confidence, going into the busy tennis summer.

Kohlschreiber Hoping to Continue Recent Form

German Philipp Kohlschreiber has been on the ATP circuit for more than a decade and always been a force to reckon with. With more than 10 appearances in the last 16 of a Grand Slam, Kohlschreiber has troubled many a well known opponent. A gritty approach, a clean single handed backhand, and great court coverage have been the highlight of his career.

2019 has treated Kohlschreiber decently thus far. Pushing Roger Federer close in Dubai was one of the highlights of the German’s year, with the key highlight being defeating Novak Djokovic in straight sets at the Indian Wells Masters 1000 in March. The German has had some good tournaments on the circuit this spring and continues to show he can never be underestimated.

Kohlschreiber beat Italian Andres Seppi in straight sets in the first round here in Munich. The German will be looking for a solid run at his home tournament this week.

Khachanov v Kohlschreiber Predictions & Tips

Khachanov has the more powerful game, where as Kohlschreiber can be more deft and tactical. At the end of last year, one would have called the Russian an obvious favorite in this match-up. But, with current form and how the two players have fared this season, Kohlschrieber definitely starts this match as a slight favorite. Expect a close encounter with the German Kohlschreiber winning in three sets.

Tip: Kohlschreiber to win in three: 3/1 (888Sport)
