This will be the first meeting between Dimitrov and Fritz at any level.
Can Dimitrov Overcome his Worrying Form Crash?
Dimitrov ended the 2017 season ranked third in the world with a promise of so much more and better than a semi-final spot at the Australian Open and Wimbledon that had been his best performance till then. All of which changed from the start of the new year last season and for the worse.
It was a slow and a gradual decline over the year as he failed to defend points at many of the competitions but by the time the season had ended he had fallen to 19th in the world, first round exits at Wimbledon and US Open accentuating that fall.
And now that fitness problems have made it more difficult for the Bulgarian, he is perched at 49th in the world, having not made the quarter-final of any event since the Brisbane International in the first week of January. A fourth round appearance at the Australian Open should have helped morale but that’s followed by just three tournament appearances over the past three months.
While a defeat at the hands of Monte-Carlo in round three was par for the course, an early loss at Barcelona last week would have hurt.
Qualifier Taylor Fritz Hopes for Monte-Carlo Magic
Fritz is just 21 and clay isn’t his most preferred surface. And coming into this competition there were first and second round losses at Estoril and Barcelona respectively that only underlined that feeling but he will want to look back at how showing in Monte-Carlo.
While he was sent packing by Novak Djokovic in the third round at that Masters tournament, Fritz had overcome Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Diego Schwartzman in the first two matches in that one to make it as far as the round of 16. And here, at Madrid, he registered back to back straight-set wins to enter the main draw of the tournament.
Can he reproduce the Monte-Carlo magic here which comes with a reward of a second round meeting with Djokovic again?

Dimitrov starts favourite at 4/7 to win this one and we think he should bag this but with some difficulty. A three-setter looks likely but Dimitrov should still win a games handicap offer as follows.
