Marin Cilic v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head
Overall, they are 1-1 on the head to head with Struff having beaten Cilic as recently as 2018 in a final-set tie-break in Tokyo. With Cilic struggling to get any momentum, things might look very difficult for the Croat going into this encounter.
Cilic Snaps a Losing Streak…Only Just!
The Croat’s struggles had been well-chronicled in our preview for his first round match against Martin Klizan and as predicted the match went right down to the wire before Cilic won in three sets. In doing so he snapped a four-match losing streak, winning the final set in a tie-breaker.
Before coming into this tournament, Cilic’s 12 encounters this season had yielded him just six wins and with clay not being his most favourite surface, he was expected to face more strain. That said, he had won a tournament on clay in 2017, and now after having lost back to back matches at Monte-Carlo and Budapest, he has finally won one.
And it wasn’t without a fight. Klizan had four match-points in the encounter, and had he won any of those points, it would have relegated Cilic to his fifth straight defeat. Instead, he found hard and came back strongly to win the final set in a tie-breaker, 7-0.
Barcelona Campaign Should Give Struff Confidence
Having been knocked out in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters and then failing to get past his first round opponent at Munich, Struff might have found it difficult to put up any kind of fight against Cilic had it not been for his showing in Barcelona.
There, he made it as far as the quarter-final stage, after winning matches against David Goffin and Stefanos Tsitsipas before Rafael Nadal had to fight very hard to get past him in straight sets.
In his first round here at the Madrid Masters, Struff had a tricky opponent in the form of Nick Kyrgios but the Aussie’s switched-off showing helped the German get past him in straight sets. It would be tough for one to look at that match as any kind of an indicator given how Kyrgios blows hot and cold at times – he was quite cold in that match – but it still allows Struff a chance to move further into the draw.

Expect another three-setter in this one and while Cilic will start off as a favourite we will avoid calling a winner on this one and instead put our money on the match to go the distance.
