Simona Halep v Kiki Bertens Head to Head

The head to head record between the two players is tied at 3-2 in favour of Halep. Their last meeting took place in the final of the 2018 Cincinnati Open, where Bertens won in 2-6, 7-6(6), 6-2, to win the tournament.

They have also met twice on clay and there, both of them have got a win each.

Halep on the Cusp of Glory Again

Halep started the week in Madrid with a chance to become World No. 1 again, provided she wins the tournament. After what has been a blockbuster performance by the current Roland Garros champion, she is just one win away from taking back what was hers.

The Romanian reached the final four after defeating Margarita Gasparyan, Johanna Konta, Viktoria Kuzmova, and Ashleigh Barty in straight sets. It is worth mentioning that Halep defeated Kuzmova 6-0, 6-0, in what has been one of the most clinical wins of her career.

In the semifinal, she met Belinda Bencic and knocked her out in three sets. This is Halep’s second final of the season, with other one being the WTA Doha. The number three seed is yet to win a title this season as she started the year on a shaky note. But after a few experiments with coaching, it now appears that she has the perfect recipe for success.

She is working with Daniel Dobre with whom, she reached the semifinal in Miami. Now, under his tutelage, she has made it to the Madrid Open final for the fourth time in her career. She has already won the tournament twice in 2016 and 2017.

Bertens Returns to Final

Bertens was a finalist in Madrid last year, where she lost to Petra Kvitova. Now, she has got another chance to win one of the biggest titles of her career.

She has had a very interesting run here, moving past the likes of Jelena Ostapenko and Anastasija Sevastova in straight sets. In the quarterfinal, she knocked out Kvitova 6-2, 6-3, to avenge her last year’s loss and the recent defeat in Stuttgart.

The Dutchwoman continued to play in the same vein against a resurgent Sloane Stephens too. The number seven seed knocked out the American 6-2, 7-5.

Bertens is a clay specialist, with a majority of her singles titles coming on this surface. She has had a good run so far and is enjoying her life in the top 10. The reigning Korea Open champion won the WTA St. Petersburg and followed it with a couple of mediocre performances.

Halep v Bertens Predictions & Tips

This is going to be a tight game. Bertens has a good record against top 10 players and has already defeated many big names over the course of her career. She has also got a respectable record against the Romanian. Halep, meanwhile, has a shot at the No. 1 ranking again and will do everything possible to achieve it.

Both the players have been absolutely phenomenal and efficient in their plays. They are experienced, well-suited for clay, and have the drive to win. All we can say is that we are in for an entertaining Madrid Open 2019 final on Saturday.
