This is the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.
Zhang Seeking a Resurgence
The 30-year-old Chinese, who won the Australian Open doubles title this year with Samantha Stosur, will be hoping for a similar run on the singles circuit. However, she is going to face a difficult task, given that she hasn’t been in the best of the form, of late.
Last week in Madrid, she lost her opening game to Kateryna Kozlova 6-3, 6-2. This loss came after she won the 125K Series event in Anning. As for her run throughout this season, she has spent it trying to move past the early rounds.
In Miami, she reached the final in doubles half with Stosur but as a singles player, she was knocked out by Petra Martic in the first round. Zhang incurred similar results in Hua Hin, Melbourne, and Hobart too.
Azarenka Hoping for a Good Run
By Azarenka’s standards, the season so far has been rather kind to her. While she began the year with an uneventful spell, she has had a much better run on clay.
She was the runner-up in Monterrey, where she retired in the final against Garbine Muguruza. Similarly, in Stuttgart, she reached the quarterfinal but bowed out to Anett Kontaveit after retiring in the final set at a 3-0 lead.
Last week, Azarenka played in Madrid where she lost in the second round to Sloane Stephens. Nonetheless, the Belarusian will still fancy her chances here in Rome. She has already defeated a couple of top 10 players this season like Karolina Pliskova and Angelique Kerber.
Being a two-time Grand Slam champion, she is more than capable of delivering excellent results.

Azarenka is going to start this match as the favourite to win. She has more experience and has been in a fairly better form this season, in comparison to Zhang.
