Stanislas Wawrinka v David Goffin Head to Head

The two players have met four times with Wawrinka leading the head- to-head 3-1. They have never met on clay.

Wawrinka Looking for Deep Run in Rome

2015 French Open winner and 2017 runner-up Stanislas Wawrinka has been on the comeback since his knee surgery more than a year ago now. After initial failures upon his return, Wawrinka has again become a force to reckon with, undoubtedly. The Swiss, a three-time Grand Slam winner, will be hoping for more consistent results however. 2019 has been a year of encouraging victories, and deep runs intermittently, but also unconvincing performances against lesser players.

With strong groundstrokes on either wing, Wawrinka has been a strong contender during the clay court seasons and will hope for a satisfying run in Rome, heading into the French Open. Some convincing victories in Madrid will give him confidence, despite a humiliating loss in the quarter-finals to the ‘’King of Clay”- Rafael Nadal.

Wawrinka is ranked 29th at the moment, but has been ranked as high as number three, and will be looking to move up the rankings further in the near future.

Goffin Hoping For Return to Form

Belgian David Goffin was ranked in the top ten of the ATP tour a little more than a year ago, and considered as a challenging opponent on any surface, specifically on the slower clay. With a very strong baseline game, and immense grit, Goffin has produced some impressive results in his career; none more than the ATP Year End finals in London in 2017, defeating Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer en route.

2018 and onwards has been freak injuries and other injuries, as well as a dip in form for Goffin. The Belgian was missing from the tour at different points in 2018 and despite a comeback in 2019, Goffin has not been quite the player he was. One of the best returners in the game, repetitive elbow injuries has also been a deterrent to his free movements.

Goffin will be looking for a return to form in Rome, ahead of the French Open soon thereafter.

Stanislas Wawrinka v David Goffin Predictions & Tips

Both players have a game that has served them well on the clay. Incidentally, both have spent most of 2018 and this year, trying to make a comeback to their 2017 form and rankings. Progress has been continuously checked by different factors for both. That being said, Wawrinka is probably further ahead on the comeback, despite ranked lower than Goffin at the moment. This could be an interesting battle, but Wawrinka should pull through in two hard fought sets.
