Pliskova v Tomljanovic Head to Head
The two players have met thrice on the tour and the Czech currently leads Tomljanovic by 2-1. They met as recently as the Brisbane International earlier this season, where Pliskova won in three sets.
Pliskova Struggling on Clay
The clay surface was never Pliskova’s strong suit and the same has been evident this season too. The WTA Tokyo champion has suffered early defeats in Stuttgart and Madrid, respectively to Victoria Azarenka and Kateryna Kozlova.
However, it isn’t to say that Pliskova hasn’t got what it takes to win here. She reached back to back quarterfinals on the tour in Melbourne, Dubai, Indian Wells, and Miami. In the last case, she made it as far as the final before losing to Ashleigh Barty.
This year, she has also defeated the likes of Garbine Muguruza, Serena Williams, and Simona Halep. But on clay, things have been clearly different for her. Out of 12 singles titles she has won, only two have come on this surface. As for her best run in Rome, she was the quarterfinalist here back in 2017 while last year, she lost in the second round itself.
Tomljanovic in With a Promising Start
The Aussie kick-started her campaign in Rome with a straight-set win over Tamara Zidansek. With that win, she has surpassed her previous week’s result, when she lost to Mihaela Buzarnescu in the first round in Madrid.
She has had a couple of intriguing runs already on clay this season, most notably reaching the semifinal in WTA Rabat. In addition to this, Tomljanovic was also the runner-up in WTA Hua Hin – the fourth such feat of her career.
Apart from these positive results, she has mostly struggled to move past the early rounds.

Pliskova will start this match as the odds-on favourite but given her spell last week, anything can happen here. Neither of them has been in a phenomenal form of late, nor is clay their preferred surface. Expect this one to be an entertaining affair.
