Kei Nishikori v Taylor Fritz Head to Head
These guys have already played twice before this match and Nishikori has won in straight sets both times. The first match was played in Memphis, in 2016, where they met in finals and Nishikori won 6-4, 6-4.
Their second match was played just three weeks ago in Barcelona and the Japanese player once again had no major problems to win – 7-5, 6-2.
Nishikori Looking to Raise Form on Clay Before Roland Garros
Kei Nishikori had a great start to this year as he won the first tournament he played in (ATP Brisbane) and after that won four matches in the Australian Open before having to retire the quarterfinals match against Djokovic while being 6-1, 4-1 down.
After a great January, he won nine of 16 following matches and managed to enter the semifinals twice but has won only four of seven matches on clay and will try to add some more wins on this surface here in Rome.
Fritz Playing Surprisingly Well On Clay This Year
Although he was never known as a great clay courter, Fritz has managed to win 9 of 13 matches on red clay and got wins against players like Tsonga, Schwartzman, Kuhn, Dimitrov, Pella and some other better clay courters than himself.
He played qualifiers here in Rome in 2016 and 2018, both times exiting in the opening round, after three-set losses to Stepanek and Youzhny.
This is why his 6-3, 6-4 opening round victory against Pella yesterday has even bigger significance and Fritz will surely be motivated to get another big result here.
Nishikori v Fritz Predictions & Tips
Nishikori has maybe won both previous matches against Fritz in straight sets but in both opening sets of those matches, Fritz played really good and has lost them 6-4 and 7-5. I expect that the young American can once again stay close in the first set and manage to win at least four of his service games in it.
