Denis Shapovalov v Ugo Humbert Head to Head
This is the first meeting between the two 20-year-olds on the ATP Tour.
Shapovalov in with an Uneventful Clay Run
With the French Open set to start next week, the Canadian’s preparation for the same hasn’t really gone according to the plan. In the four clay tournaments he has played in so far, World No. 23 has won only one match.
That win came in Rome last week, where he defeated Pablo Carreno Busta before losing to Novak Djokovic.
Shapovalov had a pretty promising run at the start of the season, reaching the third round in the Australian Open, Montpellier, and Rotterdam. He had a major breakthrough in the Miami Masters, where he made it as far as the semifinals. In these performances, he also defeated the likes of Marin Cilic, Andrey Rublev, and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Humbert Starts with a Good Win
While Shapovalov enjoyed a bye into the second round, Humbert had to fight his way through in Lyon. In the opening match, he moved past Cameron Norrie 6-1, 6-3, to reach the second round on the tour for the first time since the ATP Marseille.
Following that semifinal run in Marseille, the Frenchman lost all of his opening games – a few in the qualifiers as well – in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, and so on. He last played in the Madrid Masters where he was knocked out in the qualifying round by Roberto Carballes Baena.
On the Challenger circuit, Humbert has performed fairly well, winning the event in Cherbourg and reaching the semifinal Quimper.

Neither of the two players has been exceptional on the clay surface so far. But given Shapovalov’s superior form on the whole and his winning experience, he will begin as the favourite here. However, the possibility exists for a massive upset here.
