Stefanos Tsitsipas v Maximilian Marterer Head to Head

There is no history of any previous meetings between these two players on the ATP tour.

Tsitsipas, The Greek Sensation With A Bright Future

Stefanos Tsitsipas has been a revelation this year to say the least. His 2019 season has been on an upward trajectory and this has been highlighted with a career-high ranking of World No.6.

Since beating Roger Federer at this year’s Australian Open, the young Greek went on to advance to his first Major semifinals. He also clinched two more ATP titles, in Marseille and then Estoril (first on clay).

His form during the first quarter of the year and the latter part of European clay-swing projected his rise in the rankings. The 20-year-old is one of the hottest players on tour right now, and judging by his recent achievements, he could surpass the likes of Zverev and Thiem in the not too distant future.

Can Marterer Replicate Last Year’s Achievements in Paris?

Maximilian Marterer is one of Germany’s rising stars with a career high-ranking of World No.45 achieved during the last quarter of 2018. However, things have not been plain sailing for the 23-year-old in 2019.

On the back of a succession of poor results and loss form, Marterer lost a huge chunk of points he gained last year, and as result he tumbled down the rankings.

He is now hovering just outside the Top 100, putting his stock stagnant for the moment as he has played majority of events at Challenger level.

It is easy to forget that Marterer was perhaps one of only two players (along with Schwartzman) to trouble Rafael Nadal at last year’s Roland Garros. The German is a very powerful baseliner who measures his groundstrokes with depth on both wings. He led Nadal briefly in the first and third sets but succumbed to defeat.

He reached the fourth round last year, which is turned out to be his best ever result in a Grand Slam to date. If he wants to replicate that feat, he will need to overcome one of the tour’s in-form players.

Tsitsipas v Marterer Predictions & Tips

Tsitsipas is in great form at the moment, which is such a contrast to his opponent. Marterer though is not to be underestimated. This will be such a physical battle from the back of the court and on paper, it does not look straightforward for the Greek. With that said, I fancy the German to win a set here, but Tsitsipas should be strong over five sets.

Tip: Over 3.5 sets in the match: 12/5 (888Sport)
