Stan Wawrinka v Jozef Kovalik Head to Head

Stan Wawrinka and Jozef Kovalik have played each other only once before, and incidentally that was at the 2017 French Open where Wawrinka triumphed in straight sets. Kovalik is playing in his third successive French Open and is yet to move past the first round, while the Swiss star is a former champion in Paris.

Deja Vu Yet Again For ‘Stan The Man’?

Stan Wawrinka, the 2015 Roland Garros champion is inching closer to rediscover his old mojo which took him towards a stunning success over World No.1 Novak Djokovic four years ago. That victory seems like a distant memory bearing in mind that a lot has happened ever since.

Wawrinka went on to reach a career-high ranking of No.3, won a third Grand Slam singles title at the US Open in 2016 and a year later was at the treatment table. Having successfully undergone double knee surgery in 2017, which turned out to be more complicated than anticipated and which nearly cost the Swiss his career, he is back to playing tennis again.

The 34-year-old is still chasing his first title post-surgery and he remained tight-lipped during a recent interview that he reportedly split with his girlfriend, Croatian tennis player Donna Vekic.

Wawrinka will be keen to put his injury troubles and off-court events behind him when he sets foot on the Parisian dirt. And what better way can ‘Stan The Man’ think of than going all the way.

Kovalik Is Yet To Win A Match At A Grand Slam

Jozef Kovalik may be relatively unknown on tour-level, but he has been an ever-present fixture on the Challenger tour where he has won three titles.

The Slovak made his debut at a Grand Slam at the 2016 Australian Open, but he has never won a match at that level. His two main draw matches at the French Open in the last two years ended in defeat and one of them was against Wawrinka.

The 26-year-old has not had luck on his side of the draw and he is coming to Paris in poor form after suffering a handful of defeats this year. Kovalik’s most notable achievement on tour was in reaching the semifinals of the German Open in 2018, and if he can cause one of the biggest upsets on Day 2 it will surely rank as his best moment of his career.

Wawrinka v Kovalik Predictions & Tips

Wawrinka started the year is good form reaching the latter stages of most tournaments in the first quarter of 2019. But he has produced some subpar performances along the way. This is a big stage for him and he thrives playing in Majors these days. He should overpower the Slovak.
