This is the first meeting between the two players on the WTA Tour.
Osaka’s Brilliant Form this Season
Naomi Osaka is heading into this fixture as the top seed after what has been a remarkable season for the young Japanese. She started her clay season in Stuttgart, where she reached the semifinal.
Osaka then featured in Madrid and Rome, where she made it as far as the quarterfinal. In the latter, she withdrew from her quarterfinal bout owing to an unexpected hand injury and it will be intriguing to see if she has fully recovered from it.
The current US Open champion has been on a roll in the Grand Slams, maintaining a 14 match win-streak. She won the Australian Open after upsetting some big names and staking her claim as the best player on the tour.
Of course, there were many instances where her No. 1 crown was thrown in the ring but Osaka, on the back of her superior form and a bit of luck to a certain extent, managed to retain it time after time.
Schmiedlova Struggling with Her Form
The 24-year-old started the season on a great note, reaching the final in WTA Hobart. But instead of retaining that momentum, Schmiedlova ended up going through a rather disappointing spell on the tour.
She incurred a series of early losses in Indian Wells, Miami, Charleston, Prague, and most recently, Strasbourg. The Slovak hasn’t really made that big of an impact on the tour this season and it is hard to imagine her doing the same in Paris.
Schmiedlova hasn’t made it past the third round in the French Open since 2013.
Osaka v Schmiedlova Predictions & Tips
Osaka will begin this match as the odds-on favourite, there is no doubt in that. It is quite unlikely for the Slovakian, who has been so out of form, to topple the top seed.
However, Osaka herself is coming in this match after recovering from an injury, and with Kerber and Wozniacki already out due to similar reasons, she may very well follow them.
