Rafael Nadal v Yannick Maden Head to Head

The two players have never met on the ATP tour. Looking at the matchup, it is the King of Clay up against a qualifier who has just won his first ever Grand Slam singles match.

Nadal’s Quest for Number 12 Gets off to a Convincing Start

11-time French Open winner Rafael Nadal is looking to add to his tally in a fortnight from now. The clay court season that is usually convincingly Nadal’s, did not start so well for the Spaniard this time.

Semi-final losses at Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid began to raise questions on his form and proposed performance at Roland Garros. However, a strong showing at the Rome Masters, winning the title and defeating Novak Djokovic in the finals, definitely restored Nadal’s confidence and strengthened his position as the favorite for the French Open.

Nadal played German qualifier Yannick Haffman in the first round at the French Open and made quick work of his opponent, winning 6-2, 6-1, 6-3. The Spaniard world number two has a favorable draw and will be looking to make his way in good time through the early rounds before the challenges of week two.

How Will Maden Handle the Occasion?

29-year-old German Yannick Maden beat fellow qualifier Kimmer Coppejans in the first round at Roland Garros, for his first ever win at a Grand Slam singles match. The German had been on the ATP Challenger circuit for a while before making his debut on the main tour in 2016.

His last 18 months have seen his ranking move from outside the top 300 to as high as number 104 last month. The 6’1” German has a game that is unknown to many, given his limited presence on the professional tour. Rafael Nadal mentioned resorting to YouTube videos from Munich last year where Maden played Alexander Zverev to get some insight into his game and playing style ahead of their encounter.

Maden looked convincing in his straight sets first round win, with good groundstrokes and controlling the play from the back of the court in a convincing manner.

Nadal v Maden Predictions & Tips

Maden has performed increasingly better in the last 12-18 months and is knocking on the doors of the top 100 ranking. But, playing against Nadal on the Roland Garros is something even the likes of Roger Federer have failed to provide a challenge to. Nadal has been going from strength to strength on the clay this summer and will have too many tricks for the German. Expect Maden to provide a spirited showing, but Nadal will be too strong for him and win in three comfortable sets.

Tip: Games Handicap – Nadal -6.5: 8/11 (888Sport)
