Tsitsipas Surges Into Second Week With A Battling Performance
Stefanos Tsitsipas reached the fourth round of the French Open for the first time in his career courtesy of his two-day match win over Filip Krajinovic in four sets. The 20-year-old NextGen star had been in the ascendancy after taking the first two sets before play was brought to an end for the day due to darkness on Friday.
However, on resumption on Saturday, Krajinovic played some inspired tennis to take the third set and came within one service hold to force a deciding fifth.
Tsitsipas though showed remarkable composure and battling qualities to avoid any drama and safely progressed. He became the first Greek player – man or woman – to reach the round of 16 at Roland Garros since 1936.
“I’m proud, proud to be the first one in Open Era,” Tsitsipas said. “I think there is more than that, in my opinion, more records to break than just this.”
Of his first meeting with the 2015 Roland Garros champion, Tsitsipas said, “It seems like he has found his form, his game. And as we all know, he did quite well here plenty of times, not just once.”
Wawrinka Finding Form At The Right Time
Stan Wawrinka arrived in Paris in a poor run of form. He was on a three-match losing streak after being demolished by Rafael Nadal in the last eight in Madrid, and then suffered shocking first round exits in Rome and Geneva respectively.
The Swiss No.2 snapped that losing streak in brilliant fashion as he saw off Josef Kovalik in the opening round in four sets before producing a sublime performance against Cristian Garin in his next match, where he only lost five games.
The former World No.3 then recorded his third straight win over Grigor Dimitrov in a Grand Slam by winning in three tiebreaks. That victory over the Bulgarian was Wawrinka’s 500th match-win of his glorious career.
It is a minor surprise that Wawrinka has not been mentioned as one of the favorites in Paris especially when you consider his sheer ability to take the racket out his opponents on any day when he is on song. On the basis of his displays last week, no one will fancy taking him on.
Tsitsipas v Wawrinka Predictions & Tips
Tsitsipas has looked excellent in the first week but he also had a few shoddy moments, dropping service a handful of times against Krajinovic. He should be mightily relieved the Serb failed to serve for the fourth set. Wawrinka is playing with a real swagger – and dare I say it, this is the best tennis he is playing on clay this year.
The Swiss is also slightly overpriced for the win here. Wawrinka has a better weight of more and his one-handed backhand is a serial weapon which will trouble Tsitsipas.
