Milos Raonic v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head

This will be a first meeting between these two players.

Raonic Returns From Knee Injury

Former World No.3 Milos Raonic will make his long awaited comeback from knee injury to take on Australian young gun Alexei Popyrin at the Mercedes Cup. The big serving Canadian has not struck a tennis ball in singles competition since losing in the second round of the Miami Masters.

Raonic is a modern-day generation tennis baseliner who utilizes enormous power on his serve and forehand. Those two weapons in his arsenal have endeared him to record consistent results on hard and grass courts.

The World No.18 is a former a runner-up at Wimbledon (lost to Murray in 2016) and he reached the showpiece final at the Stuttgart Open last year (lost to Federer). The last two years have seen the 28-year-old struggle to compete on a consistent basis which saw his descent in the rankings (dropped as low as No.38 in 2018).

Raonic attained some much needed match fitness after he won a doubles match at the Stuttgart Open on Monday with his partner Robert Lindstedt.

Popyrin Will Fancy Underdog Status

Alexei Popyrin might only be 19, but he is another NextGen superstar on the brink of breaking into the world’s Top 100.

2019 is becoming a relatively perfect breakthrough year for young Popyrin who recorded his first Grand Slam win at the Australian Open. The Australian youngster should not be underestimated espcially when you consider the jump he made in the rankings in the span of one year.

Popyrin was ranked just outside the world’s top 600 at the start of 2018. But following qualification into the main draw of the pre-Australian Open events last year along with a title triumph at the Jinan Challenger, he was able to rise to as high as World No.147.

He began 2019 with a high profile win over World No.4 Dominic Thiem in the second round of the Australian Open and then following it up with six main draw appearances in the next five months.

Raonic v Popyrin Predictions & Tips

Despite a long absence from tour, Milos Raonic will still be a heavy favorite to win here. The Canadian is a serving machine on hard courts and on grass. He could not have been more pleased to be back on tour than returning to the center of his best appearance in the last one year.

Tip: Raonic to win in straight sets: 2/3 (888Sport)
