Karen Khachanov v Matteo Berrettini Head to Head

The two men have played each other twice, with both meetings occurring this year, and Berrettini winning on each occasion. The most recent of those encounters occurred barely a week ago on the grass of Stuttgart, when the Italian won easily on his way to the title.

Khachanov Battles Past Local Favourite

Khachanov was given a stiff test by the Serb Miomir Kecmanovic in his first round match in Halle, and had an even sterner examination at the hands of local favourite Jan-Lennard Struff on Wednesday, before eventually prevailing in the third set.

He was out-served by the German, who produced almost twice as many aces as him. However, it was Khachanov’s superior ability to return service that proved decisive, but he will have to up his game if he is to beat Berrettini.

Not only did the Italian beat him on grass last week, but he has already got one over Khachanov this week as well. He and his partner Jean-Julien Roger, beating Khachanov and Radu Albot in the first round of the doubles on Wednesday.

Berrettini, a Surprise Winner in Stuttgart

Berrettini was not known as a grass player prior to Stuttgart last week, with most of his previous success coming on the clay courts on which he was brought up, and hard surfaces. Yet he managed to go through the entire tournament without dropping his service once, a feat so rare that it has only been achieved twenty times in the last 20 years, once before by Berrettini himself in Gstaad last year.

That win propelled him to  career high ranking of 22, and he carried that form into his first round match here, beating the number six seed, Nikoloz Basilashvili, again in straight sets.

On Thursday, he raced into a three love lead in the first set against compatriot Andreas Seppi, who failed to read the script though, and bounced back to take the first set, breaking the Berrettini service in the process. However, normal service was then restored, as Berrettini then fought back, to close out the match comfortably in the end.

Khachanov v Berrettini Predictions & Tips

Whilst Khachanov is the seeded player here, Berrettini will start the odds-on favourite for this match. That prediction is based on their head-to-head record, and the fact that the Italian has already beaten the Russian once already this week in the doubles event, and can be expected to do so again.

Tip: Berrettini to win in straight sets: 1/1 (888Sport)
