Johanna Konta v Maria Sakkari Head to Head
Sakkari last met in the Rabat a few months back, where she dispatched the Brit in three sets to win the only title of her career. Before that, their last meeting took place in the Wimbledon in 2017, where Konta drew first blood.
A Crucial Week for Konta
Playing in front of her home crowd in Eastbourne, Konta kick-started her journey in the tournament with a straight-set win over Dayana Yastremska. She will now look to better her result from the last week in Birmingham, where she fell to Jelena Ostapenko in the second round.
Following a spectacular run on clay where she lost just four matches, Konta is still primed to put up a good fight here and at the Wimbledon. It has been quite a journey, especially considering that she had a very slow start to the year.
Seeded 14th for the tournament, she made it to the semifinal at the SW19 a couple of years ago. It will be interesting to see whether Konta’s remarkable form this year was just a one-off thing or will she continue to deliver on grass as well.
Sakkari with More Momentum on Grass
The 23-year-old Greek has been a regular part of the grass season ever since it began. She has already played in Nottingham and Birmingham, but with had a pretty mediocre run. In the first case, she lost in the quarterfinal to Jennifer Brady while in the next event, she fell to Naomi Osaka in the opener in three sets.
Sakkari is similar to Konta in a few ways – she too had a pretty good run on clay. She reached the quarterfinal in Charleston and semifinal in Rome while winning the title in Rabat. She also registered wins over many highly-ranked players.
In Eastbourne, she started her campaign with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jessica Pegula.
Konta v Sakkari Predictions & Tips
Sakkari has defeated some big names like Kiki Bertens, Petra Kvitova, and Anett Kontaveit. She is slowly starting to emerge as a dominating force and can certainly create problems for the Brit. Expect this one to be a nail-biting affair with both the players to win a set each.
