Bertens – A Favourite in Eastbourne
The season so far has been a stunning one for Kiki Bertens, who recently became a part of the top five after a superb, consistent performance. She won the Madrid Open and reached the semifinal in Rome and Stuttgart while upsetting many big names in the process.
She also had a good run in St. Petersburg, where she won her first title of the year. Widely regarded as a clay-court specialist, Bertens is now slowly starting to display her prowess on grass too. With a win-loss record of 31-12, she is heading for the Wimbledon with a lot of momentum.
A couple of weeks back, she played in the Libema Open where she reached the final. There, she met Alison Riske but despite being the heavy favourite, she fell to her in three sets.
In this tournament, she started her campaign with a straight-set win over Yulia Putintseva.
Friedsam Seeking Resurgence in Eastbourne
Anna-Lena Friedsam, who is playing under protected ranking in the tournament, has had a decent run so far. Having recovered from a shoulder injury, the German is slowly trying to find her footing after a long hiatus from the tour.
The 25-year-old Friedsame is currently ranked in the early 300s, has missed more than a year of action owing to her surgery. She returned to the tour only in February and since then, has played in a few events with little to show for.
Her best run came in Nurnberg, where she reached the quarterfinal after defeating Andrea Petkovic. As for her run in Eastbourne, she most recently defeated Anett Kontaveit 6-3, 6-4.
Bertens v Friedsam Predictions & Tips
Bertens will start this match as the heavy favourite to win. Friedsam is seeking a resurgence and as determined as she may be, it will be difficult for her to stop someone as strong as Bertens.
