Daniil Medvedev v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head
The two men have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the Russian, ranked ten in the world, and the Australian teenager, eighty nine places below him in the rankings.
Medvedev, Room for Improvement After His First Round
Medvedev got his 2019 Wimbledon campaign off to a comfortable start with a straight sets win over the Italian Paolo Lorenzi. Yet he will not be completely happy with his performance and will know that there is room for improvement.
His first serve success was comparatively low at 64%, and he was profligate when it came to break points. He had 13 against the Italian’s serve, but only converted two of them. He will know that a better opponent than Lorenzi would make him pay for such generosity.
The will be hoping though that the win has helped him shake of some of the rust, and help him find the form that took him to the semi-finals at the last grass court event he contested – the Queen’s Club Championship.
Popyrin, Teenage Qualifier Impresses on Debut
For Australian qualifier Popyrin this is the first time in the main draw at Wimbledon, and he is relishing his opportunity, having come through three rounds in the preliminary tournament just to get this far.
Certainly there were no signs of nerves in his match on Monday with the experienced Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, as he produced a confident display to win in straight sets, serving 15 aces to his opponent’s one.
The 19-year old has only ever beaten a top ten player once before – at the Australian Open in January when he defeated Dominic Thiem en route to the fourth round. The first Wednesday of Wimbledon would be a useful time to add another scalp to that list.
Medvedev v Popyrin Predictions & Tips
Medvedev is the clear favourite to win this match at 2/17, whilst Popyrin is priced at 31/5. The teenager has done very well to get this far, and, with nothing to lose, will play with no inhibitions. However, Medvedev should have enough experience to overcome his challenge.
