Marin Cilic v Joao Sousa Head to Head
The two men have played each other four times before, and Cilic has won on each occasion. Their head to head series began on the clay of the Madrid Masters in 2014, and then continued with three meetings on hard courts, most recently in the Australian Open in 2018. Sousa has yet to win a set against his opponent.
Marin Cilic, Overcame Tough First Round Opponent
The 2017 beaten finalist was given a tough first round draw against the world 39, Adrian Mannarino of France, something of a specialist grass court player, and overcame the challenge, winning in straight sets, although it was by no means easy. The first two sets went to tie breaks, and it needed a solitary break of serve in the third to enable him to edge ahead, and close out the third.
However, having got to the second round, he will be encouraged by the fact that the draw has opened up for him, with so many of the seeds ahead of him – Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev, and Stefanos Tsitsipas – already gone. He has made the quarter-finals in this tournament four times in the past, and, with respect to Sousa, a man he has always beaten easily, he will have half a mind on the potential matches to come.
Sousa, Made to Work by Qualifier
Sousa, by contrast, was given a much easier first round draw, at least on paper, in the shape of British wildcard and world number 472 Paul Jubb. Yet the Portuguese was made to work harder for his victory than he would have liked. He took the first set to love and then established a two-set lead, but the 19-year-old fought back and took their third on a tie-break, before Sousa reasserted his dominance in the fourth.
The 30-year old has a poor record at Wimbledon – his victory over Jubb was only his third in London in six years, so even being in the second round here is a relative novelty for him. However, he will have to step his game up considerably if he is to challenge Cilic seriously on Thursday.
Cilic v Sousa Predictions & Tips
Cilic will start the clear odds-on favourite at 2/11 against a man he has never lost to, and in one of his favourite events. Sousa is priced at 5/1, and even those odds flatter him. It is hard to see beyond the Croat notching up another comfortable win and marching on into the third round.
