John Isner v Mikhail Kukushkin Head to Head

The two men have played each other four times before, with Isner winning on each occasion. Their first meeting came on the clay of Roland Garros in 2014, and their three subsequent encounters have been on hard courts, most recently in the Paris Masters last year.

Isner Enshrined in Wimbledon Folklore

Isner marked a successful return from injury by winning his first-round match against the Norwegian number one Casper Rudd on Tuesday. It was his first match since he broke his left foot in the final of the Miami Masters in March and, beforehand, Isner had understandable concerns about how he would stand up to the test.

In the end, though he won the match in straight sets in a little under two hours, as the Norwegian dropped his opening service game in both of the first two sets. The third went to a tie-break and Rudd twice had set points, but each time Isner was able to serve his way out of trouble.

Given his long injury lay-off, last year’s beaten semi-finalist is not expecting too much of himself at Wimbledon this year, but with the draw opening up, and playing an opponent against whom he has a 100% record so far, he can expect to play more matches yet in South London this year.

Kukushkin, Comfortable Opening Win

Kukushkin, the world number 47, cruised through his first-round match on Tuesday, beating Spaniard Andujar in straight sets for the loss of just 9 games. Not a natural serve-volleyer, he served just four aces, as opposed to his opponent’s two, but dominated from the back of the court, and converted four out of the ten breakpoints that he won.

The 31-year old’s best result of the year so far came in February in Marseille, when he reached the final only to be beaten by Stefanos Tsitsipas. Beating John Isner at Wimbledon would surely top that.

Isner v Kukushkin Predictions & Tips

Isner is the odds-on favourite at 5/18, whilst Kukushkin is priced at 62/17. The Kazakh player has a strong backhand and hits the ball very flat, which has caused Isner problems in the past, but the American has always managed to get the job done and, provided that his foot holds up, should be able to do so again.

Tip: Isner to win in straight sets: 13/10 (888Sport)
