In their one and only encounter in the 2016 Canadian Open, Kvitova sailed to a comfortable win with 6-1, 6-2.
Kvitova continues to Thrive in London
Around the same time last week, there were speculations that Kvitova may not be able to participate in the competition at all owing to her arm injury. In fact, her decision to play in the first round wasn’t confirmed up until Sunday or so.
But given the way she has played so far, it is fair to say that Kvitova is not only back to her former self, she also looks primed to go the distance.
Starting with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Ons Jabeur in the opener, the Czech No. 2 defeated Kristina Mladenovic with a similar score in an hour and 27 minutes. She won 74% of her first service points and dished out 24 winners.
It definitely isn’t surprising to see Kvitova play so well in the competition. She has pretty much thrived through most of this season and at one point, was in the reaching distance of No. 1 ranking. Her injury, however, derailed those plans. Nonetheless, with just 8 defeats this season, she has been among the most clinical players on the tour.
Linette’s Best Run at the SW19
By reaching the third round in the Wimbledon, Magda Linette has set a new personal record in the tournament. In her four attempts since 2015, the Polish never made it past the first round.
This time, however, the ITF Manchester winner had different plans and a fairly simpler draw. Starting with the Russian qualifier Anna Kalinskaya in the opener, she defeated the sensational American teen Amanda Anisimova with 6-4, 7-5.
That run also marked Linette’s best run on the tour since the WTA Hua Hin, where she was a semifinalist.
Kvitova v Linette Predictions & Tips
Despite all the surprises we have seen in the tournament so far, this is one match that is most likely to go in Kvitova’s favour. The Czech is superb on the grass and has the momentum, confidence, and skill set needed to quell Linette.
