Kiki Bertens v Barbora Strycova Head to Head

This is the first meeting between the two players since their one and only encounter in the 2016 WTA Auckland. Back then, Strycova won the match in straight sets.

Bertens Survives the Townsend Challenge

Following a rather comfortable start to her campaign in the SW19, Kiki Bertens met the American player Taylor Townsend in the second round.

It was an incredible battle between the two players where Bertens was pushed to the limits. In the match that lasted for a little under two and a half hours, Bertens had to stage a comeback and save one match point to reach the third round.

After losing the first set, Bertens found herself in a world of hurdles in the next one. No matter what she did or how many times she broke Townsend’s service, the American always found a way to even the odds. With a loss of serve at 5-6, Bertens had to win a breakpoint to stay in the match.  Townsend found herself on the cusp of winning the match, but she squandered that opportunity.

The game eventually went into a tie-break where the Dutch won by two points. By the third set, Townsend’s spirit was broken as she lost breakpoints quite early and allowed Bertens to sail to a comfortable win.

With that win, Bertens has once again proved her mettle on the grass. Reaching the final in the Libema Open and the semifinal in Eastbourne, she arrived in London with a great deal of momentum. It was certainly a delight to see World No. 4 play with such finesse and maturity.

Strycova – A Doubles Prodigy

Currently ranked No. 3 on the doubles circuit, Strycova has always been a veteran doubles player 26 titles to her name. As a singles player, however, she hasn’t been able to thrive that much.

Strycova isn’t among the most consistent players on the tour although, she has had her moments. For instance, she reached the semifinal in Istanbul and Prague, and later, repeated the same feat in Birmingham too.

With her last singles title coming in the Linz Open in 2017, the Czech is clearly looking to make changes to that record. However, the chances of that happening in London are quite slim. Even though she has had a pretty easy run so far, with Lesia Tsurenko and Laura Siegemund as her opponents, Strycova will have a tough time against Bertens.

Bertens v Strycova Predictions & Tips

At the very best, Strycova may push this match to three sets but Bertens should come out on the top. She has been absolutely sensational this season and with a win-loss tally of 36-13, it is hard to imagine someone as clinical as the Dutch fall to Strycova.

Tip: Bertens to win. (888Sport)
