Christian Garin v Jeremy Chardy Head to Head

The pair have played each other four times before, every match taking place on a clay court. The Frenchman won the first three meetings in the Challenger Event in Vina Del Mar in 2013 and 2014, and again at Aix-En-Provence in 2017, but Garin was victorious in their one meeting earlier this year, beating Chardy in the round of 16 in Houston, en route to the title.

Garin Back on His Preferred Surface

World number 34 Garin is back on his favourite surface of clay after the grass court season where he struggled, losing in the first round at both Queen’s and Wimbledon. Still it is a mark of the progress he has made this year that he now finds himself ranked number one for a tournament that he would have had to qualify for just twelve months ago.

Starting the year well outside the top 100, he reached his first ATP final in Sao Paolo in February. Although he lost that match to Guido Pella, he did not have to wait long until he found himself a winner, clinching the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston in April.

Garin had never won a senior singles match outside the Americas until the Barcelona Open in May, but he showed his status as one of the coming men of the sport by winning his second title of the year, the Bavarian Open in Munich at the end of May.

Chardy’s Major Successes Reserved for Doubles

Now ranked 80 in the world, it has been ten years since Chardy’s solitary senior ATP title, which came at the Stuttgart Open in 2009. These days he tends to reserve his best performances for the doubles court – with Fabrice Martin he was runner-up at Roland Garros last month, and the pair have already won titles in Rotterdam, Marseille, and Estoril this year.

Chardy was given a tough tie in his opening round match in Bastad on Tuesday, with a match against the Spanish qualifier Pablo Carreno Busta, who is actually ranked 27 places higher than him currently. It was a tight encounter that went to three sets and, in the end, was determined by Chardy’s greater efficiency when it came to converting break points.

Garin v Chardy Predictions & Tips

Garin will start the odds-on favourite to win this match at 10/13, whilst Chardy is priced at 4/3. Although Chardy leads their head to head series, the two men are on different career trajectories currently, and the Chilean has been one of the stand-out performers of 2019 to date. Chardy meanwhile is more of a doubles specialist these days, so Garin should win comfortably.

Tip: Garin to win in straight sets: 7/4 (888Sport)
