Not known for his diplomacy, Nick Kyrgios has now got involved in another controversy around his underarm serve. This time, it has been on social media with fellow tennis player Mikhail Kukushkin.
ATP’s official Instagram handle had posted a photo of Kyrgios’ underarm serve and asked its followers whether the use of that tactic is right or ‘trouble’. Kyrgios has recently been involved in a few such underarm serves and that hasn’t gone down too well with a few of the fans and opponents.
Kukushkin used the same post for his followers and showed they had voted for the underarm serve as not being very acceptable for his fans.
Kyrgios, not known to take a backward step, replied to the post, throwing a barb at Kukushkin in the process. He said, “Don’t worry dude, I didn’t need to use it when I was chopping you up in Dubai.”
The Kazakhstan player retaliated, “That was my answer regarding underarm serve, not to you. No need to be rude to other people with no reason.”
This was followed by the Aussie stating he was merely stating facts and that wasn’t rude by any stretch.
He said: “Not sure reminding you of a tennis match is rude. I was just giving you my opinion on our match and the use of underarm serve.”
Kyrgios had gone out in the second round of the 2019 Wimbledon recently, losing a four-setter to Rafael Nadal in another controversial match. In that encounter he had smashed a ball straight at his opponent and later, when asked by a journalist about it, had replied he had done so on purpose and found no reason to apologise.
He has had his run-ins with Stan Wawrinka in the past and had also claimed Novak Djokovic would never be an all-time great even if he won more Grand Slams than Roger Federer.
