Stefanos Tsitsipas v Tommy Paul Head to Head

The two players have never met on the ATP circuit and this will be their first meeting on the tour.

Tsitsipas Looking To Rebound after Poor Grass Season

Prior to the grass swing last month, Greek sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas was in sensational form for the last year , winning his first three ATP titles, qualifying for the Australian Open semi-finals, the final sixteen at the French Open and other impressive results.

He has recorded wins against Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in this time frame as well. Currently ranked number six in the world on the ATP circuit, he remains well on course for a first appearance at the year-end ATP Tour finals, exactly a year after he won the ATP Under 21 Tour Finals in Milan.

After disappointing showing at Queen’s Club ATP 500, and a first round five set loss at Wimbledon, Tsitsipas will be looking for a good strong start on the US hard courts with about a month to go for the last major of the year. It was in Washington DC and Montreal last year, that Tsitsipas made an impact with thrilling runs.

With a strong serve, powerful groundstrokes on either wing, an elegant single handed backhand, and good court coverage, the top seed at the Citi Open, definitely starts as one of the favorites for a deep run. He received a first round bye and plays American Tommy Paul in the second round.

Can Homeboy Paul Spring an Upset?

Little known American Tommy Paul is best remembered for a strong run here at the Citi Open as a wild card in 2017.

At the back of an Atlanta Open quarter final showing, the American made his first ATP 500 final eight in the capital that year, defeating Lucas Pouille in straight sets. Paul had match point in his quarter final match against Kei Nishikori, but was unable to convert unfortunately.

The world number 135 has a strong attacking forehand, and solid footwork at the baseline and speed coming into the net.

Although he has done little of note in the last year and a bit, the American looked in fine form in the first round dispatching countryman Denis Kudla 6-0, 6-4 in straight sets.

Stefanos Tsitsipas v Tommy Paul Predictions & Tips

Tsitsipas will be looking for a quick and confident start to the hard court season, and begins as a strong favorite. However, he has complained of being a little fatigued in recent times, having played more tournaments than anyone on the ATP tour this year thus far.

The American will have the advantage of the crowd and a confidence boosting first round win over Kudla. With a strong first serve, and the ability to spread the court well, he can pose some challenges to the Greek star.

Expect a good match on the cards, with Tsitsipas winning in two well-fought sets.

Tip: Tsitsipas to win in straight sets: 4/7 (888Sport)
