Aryna Sabalenka v Coco Vandeweghe Head to Head

In their one and only encounter on the circuit, Vandeweghe defeated Sabalenka in the 2017 Fed Cup final in straight sets.

Sabalenka in Need of a Good Win

Even though Sabalenka’s performance this season has been fairly good, she still hasn’t quite lived up to the expectations that her staunchest supports hold. Currently ranked World No. 10, she started the year on a superb note with a winning run in Shenzhen but with time, that spirit faded and culminated in her early exits.

In her last few tournaments, Sabalenka has lost the opener on a couple of instances, including the one in Wimbledon to Magdalena Rybarikova. That defeat was one of the many seemingly-shocking losses that the Belarusian has incurred this season. Other players she has fallen too are Destanee Aiava, Amanda Anisimova, Alize Cornet, Ajla Tomljanovic, and Su-Wei Hsieh.

But at the same time, Sabalenka still remains to be a formidable player, capable of delivering big wins. With a massive service game and an impeccable forehand, she sailed to victories in Wuhan and Connecticut last season.

Vandeweghe Back in Action

Coco Vandeweghe, a prominent doubles and singles player, has missed the entire season owing to her injury. She underwent surgery on her right ankle – an issue that has been plaguing her since Wimbledon last year. Consequently, she took the last few months to recover from it.

As a result of her withdrawal from the tour, her singles ranking fell to 600s. In San Jose, she was handed a wildcard and in the opener, she moved past Maria Bouzkova with 6-2, 6-4. That was her first win in 14 months and now, she will be keen to build on it further.

The two-time Grand Slam semifinalist was overwhelmed with emotions following that remarkable win over Bouzkova. However, things will only get difficult for Vandeweghe from this point on.

Sabalenka v Vandeweghe Prediction & Tips

Vandeweghe will have the support of the local crowd but given her lack of form and momentum, it will be a daunting task for her to defeat Sabalenka. If anything, this can be a trial run of sorts for the American to sharpen her skills in time for the US Open.

Tip: Over 16.5 games in the match. (888Sport)
