Daniil Medvedev v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before – this will be the first meeting between the 23 year old Russian and the American, two years his junior.

Medvedev Continues to Impress on Hard Courts

World number ten Medvedev is a hard court specialist – no man won more singles matches on the ATP tour in 2018 on that surface, and he has continued to make his mark in 2019 by winning his 4th ATP career title in Sofia, Bulgaria in February.

He was the beaten finalist in both Brisbane and Barcelona, and reached the semis in Monte Carlo and Queen’s so he has already had a successful year to date.

He will be looking to consolidate that progress this week and in the Masters Events to come in Canada and Cincinnati ahead of the US Open, where he will be looking to improve on his modest record to date in Grand Slam tournaments.

Certainly he had little difficulty in disposing of the challenge of the American wildcard Bjorn Fratangelo in his second round match on Wednesday in straight sets, with a single break of serve in each set enough to get the job done.

And with fellow Russian Karen Khachanov now knocked out of the tournament and seeded above him, Medvedev will be hoping for another semi-final here this week at least.

Tiafoe, American Number Two Player

Currently ranked as the second highest American player behind John Isner, Tiafoe has struggled for consistency in 2019, and has not replicated the same form as in 2018 when he claimed his maiden ATP title at Delray Beach.

There have been some highlights – he reached the quarter-final in Melbourne before losing to Rafael Nadal, and again in Miami, where his challenge was ended by Denis Shapovalov. He also got to the quarters in Estoril. But they have been interspersed with some lows, like losing in the first round at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

However, now back on home soil and playing in front of American fans once more, he will be hoping to regain the form that he showed in patches earlier in the season. Certainly he had a comfortable enough start in Washington, beating the unseeded Russian Alexander Bublik in straight sets, cruising through the first before he was made to work a bit harder to take the second, and the match, on a tie-break.

Medvedev v Tiafoe Predictions & Tips

Medvedev is the odds on favourite to win this match at 8/15 whilst Tiafoe is priced at 7/4. The American will have the home town support, but Medvedev on a hard court is a tough proposition, and he should win with ease.

Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 6/5 (888Sport)
