Donna Vekic v Victoria Azarenka Head to Head

The two players have never before on the circuit.

Vekic Survives an Early Scare

The 23-year-old Vekic began her campaign in this year’s Silicon Valley Classic with a three-set win over Misaki Doi. Despite a pretty good first service rate, the number five seed found herself in trouble a couple of times. However, she eventually prevailed with 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.

That win marks her first win since the WTA Nottingham a few weeks back, where she reached the final after a pretty solid performance. Surprisingly, Vekic lost her opening matches in Birmingham and Wimbledon.

While the Croatian has had a pretty decent season so far, reaching the final in St. Petersburg as well, she is yet to elevate her game to the next level. Many of her defeats this season have come at the hands of top 10 players. She also hasn’t been that consistent this year, with a few spells of rather shocking defeats.

Azarenka Looking to Reinvent Herself

The two-time US Open runner-up Victoria Azarenka is seeking a resurgence in San Jose and so far, her preparations have been on track. In the opener, she quelled Harmony Tan with 6-2, 6-4, to set up the second-round showdown with Vekic.

So far this season, Azarenka hasn’t been that consistent or phenomenal but then again, she has had the misfortune of meeting top 10 players early in the competition. If we are to put that out of the equation, things may have been quite different for her.

For example, she lost to Simona Halep in the third round of Wimbledon and had similar defeats in the French Open and Rome, respectively to Naomi Osaka and Karolina Pliskova.

However, she did have a comforting run in Monterrey where she reached the final, retiring ultimately against Garbine Muguruza. The Belarusian was also on track for a similar run in Stuttgart, where she fell to Anett Kontaveit in the fourth round.

Vekic v Azarenka Prediction & Tips

Azarenka, being the experienced one, should start this match as the favourite but given her recent form, Vekic holds all the cards currently. Truth to be told, this is a game that can very well go either way as both the players are capable of pulling this off.

Tip: Over 16.5 games in the match. (888Sport)
