Marin Cilic v Felix Auger-Aliassime Head to Head

The pair have never played each other once before. This will be the first meeting between the 30 year old Croat and the Canadian teenager who is 12 years his junior.

Cilic Looking to Improve A Poor Year

Cilic has had a disappointing year. 2018 saw him reach a career high ranking of three, buoyed by reaching his first Grand Slam final in Melbourne, and he won the Queen’s title in June. He then ended the year by helping his country, Croatia, win the Davis Cup in November against the hosts France.

This year things have not gone so well. After losing in the fourth round in Melbourne, he went on a terrible run of form, losing in the first round in Dubai, Indian Wells and Miami, and then subsequently struggling in Monte Carlo and Budapest.

He arrested the slide by reaching the quarter-finals in Madrid, but illness forced him out of the tournament, and he went on to record disappointing results at Roland Garros, the Queen’s Club, and Wimbledon.

For the first time in over a decade he has not reached a tournament final in over a year, and he has seen Borna Coric overtake him as Croatia’s highest ranked player.

He progressed through to the third round by beating Marius Copil of Romania in straight sets on Wednesday, but made heavy weather of it, with both sets going to a tie-break.

Auger-Aliassime, Potential Future Grand Slam Winner

By contrast, 18 year old Auger-Aliassime has had a fantastic year to date, becoming the youngest player to break into the world’s top 30. The 2016 Junior US Open Champion has already reached three finals this year – in Rio, Lyon and Stuttgart – and although he has yet to win a senior title, it is surely a matter of when, and not if.

Allied to the fact that he also has reached the semi-finals in the Masters Event in Miami, and at the Queen’s Club, and it is easy to see why he is being tipped as a future Grand Slam winner.

One factor that distinguishes Auger-Aliassime is his determination on court, and he has already shown that in Washington this week in his second round match against the big-serving American Reilly Opelka, surviving the loss of the second set to clinch the match in the third, despite the vocal support from the crowd for the home town favourite.

Cilic v Auger-Aliassime Predictions & Tips

Despite the fact that Cilic is the higher seeded player, Auger-Aliassime is the marginal favourite at 4/5, whilst Cilic is priced at 11/10. These odds really reflect the form of the two players – the Croat has been struggling this year, whilst the Canadian teenager continues to burnish his growing reputation.

Tip: Auger-Aliassime to win in three sets: 10/3 (888Sport)
