Elina Svitolina v Maria Sakkari Head to Head

The two players met as recently as the third round of Wimbledon a few weeks back, where Svitolina won 6-3, 6-7(1), 6-2.

Svitolina Starts with a Comfortable Win

Elina Svitolina started her journey in San Jose with a bye into the second round. There, she met the Russian wildcard Daria Kasatkina, whom she dispatched with 6-3, 6-1.

That was a clinical performance by the current WTA Finals champion, who has looked rather formidable of late. Just most recently at the SW19, she made it to the semifinal where she ultimately succumbed to the eventual champion Simona Halep.

That run to the semi was her first such one since the Indian Wells earlier this season, where she fell to Bianca Andreescu. While Svitolina’s form took a slight hit after that, it is worth mentioning that she was struggling with knee pain and took some time to recover.

Of course, that short slump didn’t impact her ranking substantially. Thanks to her solid start to the season and her recent Wimbledon run, the top seed managed to retain her position in the top 10.

Sakkari on a Mission

Maria Sakkari has proven herself as a formidable player on the WTA Tour and has clearly got a bright future ahead of her. As an aggressive tennis athlete, she has a proclivity to deliver impressive results at unexpected times.

For instance, she started as a qualifier in Rome and managed to reached the semifinal after knocking out Petra Kvitova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Similarly, she won the title in Rabat – her first one of the career.

While the Greek has already asserted her dominance on clay, hard courts are a whole different matter. The best she has done this year is reaching the third round in the Australian Open, where she fell to Ashleigh Barty.

Now, she is on course to better that result by attempting to reach the semifinal in San Jose. So far, things have gone according to the plan for her as she dismantled Ekaterina Alexandrova and Mayo Hibi. Her true test will be against Svitolina – a player of great caliber.

Svitolina v Sakkari Tips & Predictions

Sakkari is a fierce competitor who will do her best to draw blood against Svitolina. She has already pushed the Ukrainian to three sets in the previous meeting and this time around, she will be keen to finally settle the score. She clearly has the skills needed to achieve that but her opponent is a strong player who will not go down easy. Something tells me that Sakkari may just win this one.

Tip: Sakkari to win 2-1. (888Sport)
