Kyle Edmund v Peter Gojowczyk Head to Head

The pair have played each other once twice before, with both previous matches coming on hard courts – in Atlanta in 2017 and again in Beijing last year. Edmund has won on each occasion, but both matches went to three sets.

Edmund in a Morale-Boosting Win over Tsonga

Edmund came into this tournament short of confidence after losing early at Wimbledon, and after a year that has seen this world ranking slide due to poor form allied with some injury lay-offs. Prior to this week, his best result of the year on the senior tour had been the semi-finals at Eastbourne in front of his home fans, although he did win the Indian Wells warm-up event on the Challenger circuit.

However, he did have a comfortable win over South Africa’s Lloyd Harris in the second round and then followed that up with a morale boosting win over experienced Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Thursday, coming from a set down to clinch the match due to a single break of serve in the third set.

He will be feeling a lot happier with his game now than he was at the start of the week.

Gojowczyk, Best Run of The Year

30-year-old Gojowczyk is currently ranked 122 in the world, although he was a top 40 player in the world last year at one point. The winner of the Moselle Open in France in 2017, and beaten finalist in Delray Beach and Geneva last year, he has shown little of that form in 2019, and, prior to this week, had not won more than a single match in any tournament this year.

However, he has belied that form in Washington, although he had to struggle past Andrey Rublev of Russia in the first round, scraping through via a third set tie break.

Emboldened by that he then beat the number twelve seed, Alex de Minaur of Australia, in straight sets, giving him a match against the eighth seed Milos Raonic of Canada. And he produced some of his best tennis of the year to beat his big serving opponent and set-up the meeting with Edmund.

Edmund v Gojowczyk Predictions & Tips

The British player is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 3/8, whilst Gojowczyk is priced at 56/19. The German has done well to get to this stage, but Edmund is the better player, and has won both their two previous matches. He should win but may need three sets again to do so.

Tip: Edmund to win in three sets: 14/5 (888Sport)
